What is CCTV Security?
Closed Circuit Television, CCTV, or video surveillance, uses cameras to monitor areas of interest. Video footage is stored on a Network Video Recorder (NVR). An NVR uses a local area network with Power Over Ethernet (PoE) to connect IP cameras. This connection is via CAT6 grade or higher copper ethernet cable. We’ve written more info about this in our blog “Difference Between NVR And DVR Security Systems“.
Depending on the NVR configuration, storage capacity can range from 2TB up to 160TB, including RAID support.
NVR systems support from 1 to 128 IP cameras. Also available in small form factor 4CH Mobile NVR’s with GPS and 3G/4G wireless SIM card slot. Typical uses being fleet management, mining equipment, machinery, boats etc.
IP security cameras are available in 1 to 12 megapixel high definition video. Cameras generally include integrated infrared night vision and models with various viewing angles. Security cameras are often integrated into ip intercoms and door intercom systems with door release for access control.

CCTV FAQ’s
How many CCTV cameras do you need for home security?
The answer to this question always depends upon the size and design of your property. It’s important to cover the home’s entrances and exits, with the front and back door being clear priorities. Inside cameras can also be critical for keeping an eye on children, or for having evidence in case of a burglary.
Around five or six cameras is the norm for an average-sized house, but your comfort is yet another significant factor. If there’s a part of the property you always want eyes on just in case, you can invest in another camera to gain peace of mind.
Where should I install CCTV cameras at home?
CCTV cameras are often intentionally obvious, as they can scare possible thieves away – so we recommend that you always display your cameras prominently. You may also want to keep an eye on outbuildings such as sheds or barns, as burglars might come to see these as easy targets.
Be sure to check the feed as soon as possible to make sure the camera has a clear view; if not, don’t be afraid to change its position or placement. Common camera placements include:
The front door
The back door
The kitchen
The living room
The main hallway
Outbuildings (such as sheds)
How long does home CCTV footage last?
Most home security CCTV systems store their footage for around two or three weeks using the Network Video Recorder (NVR) system. Our NVRs collect and store captured footage in high-quality resolution and with a high level of compatibility across different formats, helping you see everything on your property.
Some of our Hikvision systems can store more footage by using intelligent compression methods, and this may be just what you’re looking for if you require longer storage times. In the event of a burglary or other incident, you can export the footage so that it is at your disposal whenever necessary.
